Long known as Bali’s sleepiest coastal village, the Canggu area is slowly stealing modern travellers’ hearts with its largely uncharted territory and majestic beach views. Mostly occupied by foreign business owners who work in Seminyak but who prefer to live in a smaller, less-noisy part of the island, Canggu is predicted to become one of the fastest-growing areas in Bali.
So it should come as no surprise that COMO Hotels and Resorts picked Canggu for its 14th property. Sprawled across one hectare of land, COMO Uma Canggu offers stellar accommodation options along with world-class dining and invigorating wellness programmes—and, of course, breathtaking ocean vistas. Recently Indonesia Tatler got the chance to experience a two-night stay at the newly opened resort, and here’s what we’ve got to say.
After an hour-and-a-half-flight from Jakarta, we rode for another hour to reach the hotel, which is nestled between green rice paddies across from the breezy Echo Beach. Upon entering the resort, blocks of buildings are scattered on the left and right with the minimalist lobby located in the centre.
You could be forgiven for thinking that the establishment is smaller than you imagined but stay the night and the assumption is soon dispelled. The beachside resort boasts 119 contemporary rooms, suites, and one- and two-bedroom residences, as well as three-bedroom duplex penthouses featuring individual rooftop pools. Meanwhile, the resort maintains its aesthetic by combining Asian and Italian touches created by interior designers Koichiro Ikebuchi and Paola Navone. Simply put, you will definitely need to memorise the way to your room, but fret not as there are always friendly staff members on hand to help you.
Do not disturb
We were ushered into our one-bedroom residence overlooking the expansive cobalt-blue swimming pool thanks to a private balcony. The suite boasted a king-size bed with en suite bathroom that came with a generous bathtub and which was replete with modern amenities. If—and this is unlikely—you get bored of the spacious balcony or living room, then you can hang out in the kitchen with its high stools, stove, and large refrigerator.
However, the crème de la crème of rooms at COMO Uma Canggu are its three-bedroom duplex penthouses. While the first level boasts impressive features like a master bedroom suite, a gorgeous balcony, and an extravagant living room, the duplex ups the ante. A master bedroom lies opposite a half-circle domed balcony complete with rooftop pools, which are picture-perfect when set against the breathtaking Indian Ocean.
Food & drink
There is only one dining venue at the resort, but it’s more than sufficient. COMO Beach Club serves world-class cuisine with menus that proudly boast locally sourced ingredients and which are cooked with a charcoal grill for meats, seafood, and vegetables, resulting in rich and smoky flavours. Given that COMO emphasises healthy living, the menus here are all thoughtful and well-planned, ranging from Western and Mediterranean to delicious Indonesian fare (vegetarian options are also available). Guests should not miss out on the healthy Como Shambala juices and blends, or simply sip on fresh coconut water complete with disposable straws.
The COMO brand is committed to holistic wellness as proven by the capacious COMO Shambhala Retreat, which encompasses seven treatments rooms (five singles and two doubles) and which offers Asian-inspired therapies. We were treated to a 90-minute signature COMO Shambhala Massage, and, truth be told, it was the best treatments on the island. Meanwhile, get your blood pumping by visiting the resort’s gym, or take things up a notch and join either yoga or Pilates classes that are open to guests as well as locals. Our instructor, Emma (a Singaporean British national), delivered a deadly yet invigorating session of Vinyasa yoga that left us energised throughout the day.
Meanwhile, Echo Beach is known to have Bali’s best surf breaks and sees throngs of veteran surfers showing off their skills, while novices can learn luxury surfing from experts provided by COMO in partnership with Tropicsurf. If you get tired of the waves and the holistic vibes, don your sandals and get out to explore the nearby attractions. From glitzy beach clubs to hip cafés and restaurants, the lifestyle options are almost endless in the Canggu area. COMO Uma Canggu also offers a range of cultural and adventure activities across southern and central Bali, including guided Hindu temple visits by the sea, jungle trekking, canoeing expeditions, and traditional village walks.
