In April 2017, the attendees of the now-infamous FYRE Festival were being left with unsure conditions and cold cheese sandwiches. Attendees who had already spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars were promised a magnificent music festival with luxury yachts, villas, and all- night parties. In the end, they got a three-day nightmare.

FYRE Festival was meant to be a heavenly music festival on a private island in the Bahamas, which was previously owned by Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. The attendees, it was suggested, even stood a chance to say hello to supermodels like Bella Hadid and spend the night partying while listening to punk rock band Blink-182. But, in reality, it was all fake promises from the main organiser, Billy McFarland, and the “festival” turned into total chaos.

Recently, Netflix aired an exclusive documentary about the festival entitled Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened, and the world got to see what exactly did happen. The documentary showed us a glimpse of how the festival flopped through the testimonies of former employees of FYRE including the behind-the-scenes footage.

There are many lessons to learn from the FYRE Festival for millennials, for whom hyped-up festivals become go-to events for the sake of uploading  pics on their social media. One picture of you attending a hit festival will add thousands of followers to your Instagram account. But, since something like FYRE might happen again in the future, here are the four things to learn.

Check the credibility of the event organiser

The first thing to do when you want to attend any event is to check the credibility of the event organiser. Right now, in the era of the Internet, trusted event organisers should have social media pages or an official website. Make sure to check through all the information regarding the event organiser and make sure it’s credible.

Check all details about the event

The second thing to do is to check the details of the event. The venue, accomodation, performers, updates, food, toilet facilities, and anything else should be clearly stated before the events.

Do not get too influenced by influencers

Yes, we agree that what influencers do best is to influence people, but don’t get yourself too influenced by them. FYRE Festival used supermodels like Bella Hadid to promote the events. But remember:, they got money by telling you to spend money. Be wise about this, you can listen to what influencers say but when it comes to spending your money, think twice.

Control yourself

We know you are still young and want to enjoy your time, but you need to know the boundaries between what you need and what you want. You don’t have to attend every music festival there is since it will cost you more money, which you can allocate for something else. Self-control is key.
