Former Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) president Edy Rahmayadi recently shocked the nation with his decision to resign from his position as the leader. Edy announced his resignation during the PSSI congress in Badung, Bali, last January 20. Since the announcement, many names have circled around the social media and Internet, all rumoured to be the new president of PSSI. According to netizens, here are the top-three candidates trusted to lead the Indonesian football to victory.

Erick Thohir

The first name on the list must be Erick Thohir. The Indonesian businessman is the strongest candidate to fill the space as president of the PSSI. Erick’s name as strongest candidate also has good reason since he has a background in managing football clubs, being the former owner of Inter Milan (60 per cent stake in 2013) and DC United (until 2018).

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama

Another name deserving of the position according to netizens is none other than Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, also known as Ahok. The former governor is believed by the public to be able to lead PSSI because he used to handle Jakarta’s government. Another reason why Ahok’s name is mentioned is because netizens want PSSI to be in the hands of an anti-corruption and firm leader. It seems that Basuki still has a place in the hearts of the nation.

Bambang Pamungkas

Another choice from netizens for the future president of Indonesian football is to be led by former player and alumnus,  Bambang Pamungkas. The legendary Indonesian football player’s name surfaced among netizens’ tweets, all of whom believe that this is the right time for PSSI to be led by their best alumnus.
